A CHILI FACE-OFF FOR THE AGES … AND A GREAT CAUSE

Team B had a blast at pro bono client MaxFund No-Kill Shelter and Animal Adoption Center’s 20^th Annual Chili Cook-Off this past Sunday, at Denver’s The Celtic Tavern. What began as a commitment to publicize this fun event, as well as assist day-of with registrations and door prizes, ended as a battle pinning partner against partner in the new and under-entered white chili category.

BrieAnn and Jordan agreed, at the eleventh hour, to enter a white chili each into the cook-off, despite both never having made – or even tasted – their respective recipes before. BrieAnn entered the light “Dog-Gone Best White Chili” (recipe here), made of cannellini beans, chicken, green chilies, corn and lots of spices. Jordan went with a caloric “White Lightening” version (recipe here), deceptively mild, with a heavy butter and cream base, and also featuring green chilies and chicken.

 

The chilies were neck-and-neck at first, until, in a cruel twist of fate, BrieAnn ran out of chili halfway through the event.

 

In a war of attrition, Jordan’s “White Lightening” chili took the gold in the white chili category, after BrieAnn was forced to drop out of the race early. A bittersweet victory at best, as we’ll never know who the true White Chili Cook-Off Champion would have been, had the stakes been equal.

 

In the end, however, it was the dogs and cats at Maxfund who were the true victors, with the organization raising approximately $5,000 to continue to operate as one of the city’s best no-kill shelters.

We’re looking forward to next year’s event – and a rematch!
